It's name is thought to come from Poseidon's son, Proteus, who would trandsform himself in order to avoid recognition. Because the Proteacae family has such a huge variety of flowers in many shapes, sizes, and colors, it's a pretty fitting name.
 
Additionally this flower family is thought to be over 300 million years old-- among the oldest familes of flowering plants on our planet
